MORE than 1,000 runners competed in the annual Tough Ten Challenge in Weston-super-Mare this weekend.

The 10-mile multi terrain race, now in its 21st year, took place this morning (Sunday) on Weston beach.

Race director Mike Buckland said: "We have had around 1150 runners sign up this year, which is fantastic."

The Tough Ten course is designed to be within the capabilities of any normally fit runner or jogger and uses sections of closed tarmac road along the seafront and coast.

This continues along a section of the promenade, woodland paths and trails within Worlebury Woods and a little of the beach.

In parts is it flat and fast; in others there are short climbs and long downhill sections.

All funds from this year's event will go to Diabetes UK, the largest organisation in the UK working for people with diabetes, funding research, campaigning and helping people live with the condition.

It provides practical support and information and advocacy services to help people manage their diabetes and work with health care professionals to ensure the highest quality of care.

Within the South West region, there are currently over 224,000 adults living with diabetes and 1,665 children (0-15) with Type 1 diabetes who may require 95,000 injections during their lifetime.

In addition it is estimated a further 98,000 adults have the condition but don't know it and these figures are set to rise dramatically over the next couple of years.
