Better cycle and walking links for South Weston-super-Mare

Walking and cycling to school, work or for leisure is set to become a lot easier and safer for people living and working in the south of Weston-super-Mare.
North Somerset Council is constructing an off-road shared cycling and pedestrian route by upgrading and widening the existing footway along Winterstoke Road and Broadway.
The path will link to existing and future cycle and walking routes to help people travel more safely to Weston General Hospital, Weston College University Campus, local schools, Weston town centre, industrial estates and local businesses. It will also connect to new housing and business developments planned for the old Weston airfield site.
Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, executive member responsible for transport, said: "This project is being funded through a grant from the Department for Transport and with co-operation from Sustrans and is aimed at improving safety along this stretch of road by taking cycles off the main highway."
Consultation with residents and businesses about the improvements has already received many positive responses, including:
“We at Somerset Wood Recycling are all for the proposed new cycle route to the end of Winterstoke Road – we and other business owners on and around Winterstoke Road are frustrated by how difficult and, frankly, dangerous it is for our staff to cycle this stretch of road.”
Work is due to start in December and will be complete by the spring. The bulk of the work will be off road with only minor disruption to traffic.
