Investigation after fire engine collides with car at Weston-super-Mare

An official investigation has been launched after a fire engine collided with a car in Weston-super-Mare.

The fire engine had been sent from Weston fire station on a 999 call when it collided with a car in Milton Road, at its junction with Farm Road, at just before 11am on Friday.

As a result of the crash, the fire engine went through a stone wall and came to halt in the garden of a property on the street corner.

The occupants of the car, a woman aged about 20 and a man aged about 50, were both treated by paramedics at the scene after suffering minor injuries.

The man was subsequently taken to hospital as a precaution.

None of the crew from the fire engine was injured in the incident.

The fire engine was responding to a call about a man and dog trapped in a water-filled ditch in Worle.

The dog had tried to jump across the ditch off Walford Avenue but injured itself on landing and fell into the water.

The dog's owner, a man in his mid-50s, went into the water to rescue his dog but became trapped and called for help.

When they arrived at the scene emergency workers found the man waist deep in water holding onto his dog.

Firefighters pulled the man and his dog up an eight-foot embankment to safety.

The man was treated by paramedics at the scene for shock, and then he and the dog were taken to a nearby veterinary surgery for the dog to have treatment.

The inquiry is expected to last for several weeks.
