A NEW kite festival is being held in Weston this summer.
Flying high above the beach
A major new kite festival will be held in the resort on Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9m and forms part of a growing programme events being planned to help attract more visitors to the area.
It is hoped the new festival will become an annual fixture in the town's calendar. Invited guest flyers will join with local kite group Avon Kite Flyers in staging aerial displays on the beach throughout the June weekend.
Spectators will be able to enjoy colourful kites of all shapes and sizes with giant 3D creatures, power kites and synchronised team routines flown to music.
Event organisers, Avril and Martin Baker, part of the team behind the popular Bristol International Kite Festival said: "Weston beach is a great flying site with plenty of space for the experts and amateurs alike to join in the fun.
"We hope that the festival will attract many kite enthusiasts as well as providing an added spectacle for those visiting Weston on their holidays or for a family day out on the beach.
"We are looking forward to putting on a really successful show for all concerned."
North Somerset Council executive member for tourism and leisure Felicity Baker said:"This is another great example of how we are working closely with different organisations to get events like this off the ground.
"The beach is a great venue for this type of festival and I have no doubt it will be a colourful and fantastic spectacle for everyone going to watch."
