NORTH Somerset Councillors have voted in favour of demolishing the Tropicana swimming pool in Weston-super-Mare.

The seaside landmark has sat empty on the seafront for more than a decade with several regeneration schemes now failed.

Businessman Richard Nightingale offered the latest project to give it a new lease of life but the council were against it.

As a result a working party was set up to look into its future but it concluded that all redevelopment options had been exhausted and therefore recommended demolition.

The council exevutive met yesterday (Tuesday) and despite a last minute bid from a group of Weston businessmen- Kerry Michael, Puxton Park owner Derek Mead, and Worle businessman Guillio Ellis, the group rejected their plea for time to work on a proposal.

However, council leader Nigel Ashton did offer a glimmer of hope saying there could still be time for the decision to be reversed because the site 'won't be demolished tomorrow'.

This means the consortium will have to come up with a rescue package fast or the Tropicana will finally leave the seafront for good.
