Police Launch Campaign toTackle Violence in Weston-super-Mare

Police are working with pub and door managers in Weston-super-Mare town centre to help put a stop to alcohol related violence with their 'One punch can kill' campaign.

The campaign follows two serious incidents in the resort and is being launched ahead of the boozy party season.

Sergeant Mark Raby said: "In the last few months we've had two incidents in Weston where people have been very seriously injured as a result of being punched in drunken fights.

"We're launching the 'One punch can kill' campaign this week ahead of the Christmas party season to remind people that one thoughtless action on a night out can change their lives and the lives of their victims forever."

The campaign was launched on Tuesday 1 November at a Pub Watch meeting on the Weston Pier.

Police, bar, pub and door staff managers agreed the approach they'll be taking to tackle drink related violence over the Christmas period.

This will include extra police patrols, and working more closely together to ban violent offenders from all the bars and pubs in Weston.

New posters will be displayed in the town's pubs and bars to remind people about the consequences of drunken violence; from getting a prison sentence, criminal record or losing your job through to having to live with the guilt of seriously injuring or even killing someone.

Sergeant Raby added: "We want to make it clear that violence will not be tolerated in Weston town centre.

"If you do get into a fight you could find that your night is ruined by an arrest, a criminal record and a ban from all of the bars in the area.

"Weston is a great place to have a night out and we're hoping that this campaign will help all the revellers who are planning to come to the town over the Christmas period to have a happy and event free night."
