Conservative John Penrose found his department had been made smaller as part of a wide-ranging shake-up ordered by the Prime Minister.
Mr Penrose is said to be 'very saddened' by the outcome but agreed it was necessary, with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport being reduced in size following the Olympics.
He said: "Very sadly and regretfully, I am the obvious person to go.
"I can't find it in myself to criticise, as if I was them I would have done the same thing. It is entirely rational and sensible."
Mr Penrose's appointment to the tourism brief was seen as a boost for his constituency's biggest trade.
He said: "The good news is, now I'll be able to fight even harder for our area. I'm looking forward to it hugely."
