Traffic flow at Weston’s busy motorway junction is set to improve further with the switch on of the junction 21 traffic lights.

Commuters have already started to benefit from the improvements at junction 21 which are part of the £15m Weston Package project to improve traffic flow in and around Weston-super-Mare.

As the project moves into its final phase, engineers are planning to turn the junction traffic lights on during Sunday 2 February. The signals will be monitored and any timing adjustments will be made over the following few days.

The temporary traffic management and signal arrangements will remain in place on the roundabout until the permanent signals are switched on.

The complexity of the multi junction works means that the traffic lights will use ground level stop detection and the work to install the detection facilities is now being finalised.

North Somerset Council’s deputy leader and executive member for transport, Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, said: “We have already received appreciative letters from commuters seeing traffic improvements leaving Weston. Turning on these lights and getting them tuned in to be fully operational will benefit everyone arriving or leaving through junction 21. I’m confident that these improvements will continue into 2014 and beyond, making Weston a more attractive area for businesses.”

The Weston Package project covers five interlinked improvement schemes and funding came from North Somerset Council and the Department for Transport. Work to junction 21 has been carried out on behalf of the council by contractors Costain. - See more at: http://www.n-somerset.gov.uk/News/Pages/Traffic-light-switch-on-at-junction-21.aspx#sthash.nLN06cCB.dpuf
