A group of Weston College students took on an important managerial task for the day when they learned techniques in recruitment and training of employees.
Second year Foundation Degree students on the College's Tourism Management and Business Management courses gathered at the College's Knightstone Campus for a workshop with Mike Mallett, the Learning and Development Team Manager for PRU Health.
Mr Mallett passed on his considerable industry experience to the students, helping them to develop understanding of how organisations effectively manage the recruitment, selection and on-going training and performance of employees.
Organised into teams, the students were faced with a variety of tasks and challenges before being asked to assess their performance.
Mr Mallett said: "I gave the students a case study and four associated tasks which tested their understanding of Human Resources issues. They've had plenty theoretical knowledge through their courses and it's great to be able to facilitate a practical environment in which they can test out this knowledge."
At the end of the session students were asked to feed back their thoughts and put forward recommendations in the form of seminar presentations.
Angela Midgley, lecturer in Business and Tourism, said: "This was a very interesting and thought-provoking look at many aspects of Human Resources management, and the issues it raised can be applied to SMEs right up to multi-national companies.
"We're very grateful to Mike for coming up from Bournemouth and giving us the benefit of his considerable knowledge in this field."
