Weston College student union appealed for dog owners and pets to step out on a bitterly cold sunday morning in early March for a sponsored beach walk in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind along the promenade starting at Knightstone Island.

Between 10am and 12.30pm dogs and owners helped raise well over £500 including a £200 donation from walker Kat Knight and her dog Raven. The funds were being raised for 'Go Walkies' part of the national guide dog charity and Weston College's chosen charity this year.
Student Liaison and Entitlement Officer Megan Champion said: "We'll be giving prizes for the best dressed owner and dog and a prize for the dog that looks most like its owner.
"All four-legged friends will receive a goody bag for participating and afterwards people can enjoy a warm drink at the dog-friendly Stones Cafe on Knightstone Island."
Everyone who registered was in with a chance to win six months of Eukanuba dog food and children's activity packs were available to keep the little walkers happy.
Fifty plus walkers and dogs took part on the morning in arctic conditions and biting winds though this didn't deter them. Amongst the those taking part were guide dog of the year Dez with his owner John Tovey who set a great example and led the way for the other walkers taking part.
The new Weston-super-Mare branch of Guide Dogs for the Blind are looking for new members to help fundraise in the local area. For more information please contact community fundraiser Monica Cave 07766 442031 or email monica.cave@guidedogs.org.uk
