Weston-super-Mare Moor Lane Chaos and Anger !

Residents of Weston-super-Mare and in particular those of Weston Village are both angry and confused at North Somerset Councils decision to erect bollards on either side of Moor Lane bridge restricting access.

Many see the need for restrictions to be in place due to the three ton weight limit and some negligent and selfish drivers ignoring it, but most don't understand why they have been put merely 6'-6" apart, with many finding it incredibly tricky to navigate even the smallest to average car through the tiny gap.

Subsequently there has been both pandemonium and danger on the surrounding streets and the bridge itself with motorists either losing their nerve at driving through and trying to re-maneouver their vehicle around, backwards etc.. to find an alternative route, with some witnesses saying they have seen some vehicles nearly hitting school children on their way to and from school, to motorists slowing down so much to squeeze through the bollards that they then meet the oncoming traffic from the other direction because they have not been quick enough to get to the lights on the other side, resulting in cars trapped on the very narrow bridge itself and trying to squeeze past each other.

One regular user of the bridge Rachel Lees has set up an online petition to try and get the council to revert its decision to implement these stringent measures, suggesting perhaps that they could install height restrictions as opposed to the new width ones enforced, though even widening the bollards another 6 inches to 7' would probably make it significantly easier and quicker for vehicles to pass through safely. With the road being re-opened on tues afternoon the bollards are already scuffed and scratched from motorists mirrors which again are probably likely to be either also scratched or at worst now hanging off.

The council have said that they are monitoring the situation and have cameras in place so that they can see what is transpiring.

Rachel said "Please remove the newly installed bollards on Moor Lane Bridge as they are causing damage to vehicles, have isolated the village to the point that emergency vehicles could not gain access quickly in the event of an emergency when simple signs would have been appropriate. The bollards are causing more congestion to an already strained Village."  To see her petition and other peoples comments with their views and opinions click on the link below;
