Costing £9.7million the renovation of the old town hall and council offices has incorporated all of the councils operations into just two buildings, the headquarters in Clevedon and this new facility in Weston-super-Mare.
Leader of North Somerset Council Cllr Nigel Ashton said this new building which employs between 950-1000 staff will enable various departments to co-inhabit and liaise.
They have closed sixteen other council buildings housing various departments and located everyone together here in this new high tech facility. Subsequently, for example, instead of social workers having to make appointments with health workers in another building for maybe a following week, now they could simply walk over to the persons desk for a quick word. The new offices now have lots of 'breakout' areas where staff can come together to talk away from their desks in more comfortable, relaxed and informal but private areas.
Cllr Ashton said it would save invaluable time and money and bureaucracy for the working practises of different departments and teams all working together in the same environment.
With the down stairs being taken up by a large high tech library offering the very latest in books, cd's and dvd's etc.. there is also a separate Children's Zone \ library again equipped with the very latest in high tech gadgets such as book scanners and I.T computer facilities.
The building now also has a long ramp for access to the front doors, with a very spacious accommodating feel as soon as you enter the building.
Services available include:
• the new Weston Library – with dedicated zones for children and young people
• HomeChoice and housing enquiries
• council tax and benefits advice
• 30 public computers
• payment kiosks for easy payment of council invoices
• self-service library kiosks to check library books in and out
• plus all the usual council reception services.
