FORTY painted donkeys have taken up residence in Weston-super-Mare to celebrate 200 years of tourism in the town.

The glass fibre animals painted by artists from all over the South West region, have all been sponsored by local businesses and can be seen at various locations in the resort.

Each one cost £500 and they will live on concrete plinths until November when they will be auctioned for Children in Need from the Grand Pier.

Grand Pier events co-ordinator Fiona Hooper said: "It's a celebration of tourism in the town and the reopening of the Grand pier and the completion of the seafront enhancement.

"So it's a celebration really of everything coming together."

Durinf the November auction one of the donkeys will be raffled off, which will give a local person the chance to win one and another donkey will be turned into a money box for Weston Hospicecare.

Weston's real beach donkeys were voted the nation's best seaside attraction in the national Coast Awards in 2009.

That is terrible news. I only went into town this afternoon and saw five of the donkeys and thought how lovely they were. My little boy had a great time trying to find them. What horrible people there are in the world!!

I would hate to think the police are not taking this seriousy especially as they have a responsibility to the community as a whole and that includes the Artists who have taken the time to create this 'fun' for us over the summer.

It's a shame they are already being vandalised. Apparently the one in Dolphin Square was attacked by people coming out of a pub on Oxford Street. CCTV footage of the people, the pub they come out of and the attack was offered to the Police. They refused it, on the grounds they didn't want to investigate it.
The one by 'The Carrot' has been stolen. Again this is on CCTV. People just lifted it in to the back of a van. Again, the Police don't want to know.
