HEAVY snow in Weston-super-Mare was causing problems in the resort yesterday but services were trying to continue where possible.

North Somerset Court House was affected with many cases having to be adjourned because the defendants could not get to the court safely yesterday.

The county court was forced to close because the judge could not get to the courthouse due to the poor weather conditions and no alternative judge could be found.

First bus services were suspended and there were serious disruptions on the railways and at Bristol Airport.

Taxis are under pressure in Weston-super-Mare but are trying to operate as best as they can but the majority are offering limited services. Worle Cars says it is offering a limited service and is receiving three times the number of calls.

Woodspring Taxi’s said the situation was “bad” and it was “just about operating.”

Marlene Jones, owner of ARC taxi’s said: “The side roads are terrible but we are getting around slowly and are just about managing. “We have to offer a limited service though.”

Royal Mail is continuing to deliver post in Weston.

Worle postman Keith Huggins, 56, said: “At the moment individuals are being given the choice as to whether they want to go out on their round. “I cover about 520 houses in Worle and I would rather plough on and get it out.

“I am doing it because I want to get the packets out so people are not disappointed for Christmas.

“We are far behind and stuff is stacking up but everyone is doing the best they can. “It is about trying to work between the constraints of safety and getting the post out.

“Rounds are taking much longer, I had to put in four extra hours overtime on Saturday and it will probably be an extra two and a half hours today. “I think if we get three-four inches more they might not let us go out.

“The trouble is you can’t see what you are walking on when it’s deep and you could end up tripping on garden ornaments."

Dairy Crest said it was coping with the majority of milk deliveries but one milkman had to abandon his round in Bleadon.

It sends out 19 milk float rounds across North Somerset and says it has been coping pretty well.

Sara Angel, Dairy Crest clerk, at the Locking Road depot, said: “We are doing very well today and we did well on Saturday also, I even went out myself to deliver some milk to Worlebury.

“The weather is dangerous now and one man can’t continue at Bleadon so he has abandoned the round and we have had five other rounds come back after completing their deliveries.

“One of milkmen did fall over and break his wrist on Saturday but he is back at work in a cast and is going out with another driver showing him where to go.

“I am quite impressed with the way it is going, though we still get more negative comments than positive.

“One lady asked for extra milk on Saturday but I told her we only had the normal delivery with us and so she shut the door on me.”
