A BEAUTY therapy apprentice from Weston College is continuing her winning streak having won first place in a regional competition.

Hayley Wright, 17 ,from Bridgwater, won the Level 3 Advanced heat at the South West Regional UK Skills competition in Llanelli, Wales, last week, beating candidates from eight other colleges across the UK.

However, Hayley is already a candidate to represent the UK for Level 2 having won gold in the regional heat of the Level 2 contest and securing a place in the World Skills competition in London.

If she succeeds in the national heat of the Level 3 competition she will be competing at both levels – a rare precedent.

To win the competition Hayley competed against some very skilled beauty therapists performing a variety of treatments, from manicure to massage, in front of a panel of judges.

Hayley is now studying a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy with the Business Enterprise Centre, having progressed from the Level 2 Apprenticeship.

Tanita Veal, Work-based Co-ordinator for Hair and Beauty at the Business Enterprise Centre, said: “We are absolutely thrilled Hayley did so well in the regional heat, it’s a fantastic achievement.

"To be representing the College at both Level 2 and 3 is outstanding and her efforts demonstrate her consistency, motivation and skill.”

Hayley, who works at Beautology in Clifton, Bristol, said: “I cannot remember wanting to be anything but a Beauty Therapist and this passion has given me the motivation to be the best in my field.

"The training I have received from Weston College has provided me with the skills to enable me to work towards my dream.

“Studying this Apprenticeship has allowed me to observe experienced practitioners and participate in a real working environment.

"This has helped me develop my own skills and I have grown in confidence. It has given me the inspiration and encouragement to achieve, progress and realise my full potential.”

Hayley will now be evaluated nationally and will be notified if she has reached the national final.

WorldSkills UK provides more than 70 quality assured skills competitions. These annual competitions aim to encourage young people and adults across the UK to excel in their chosen vocational area.
