Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose has welcomed today’s news that unemployment in the seaside town and surrounding villages has dropped again, falling 12 per cent in the last 5 months.
According to data compiled by the House of Commons Library, the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) in the Weston constituency has dropped from 2,104 in April, to 1,844 in August.
John said: “This is welcome news.
"Weston suffered particularly harshly from the recession so it’s fantastic that our local economy is moving again and unemployment is continuing to fall.
“Of course we may not be completely out of the woods yet, which is why I’ll continue to push to get the best possible deal for our town and villages.
"We’ve already made a good start by keeping tax breaks in place for our local self-catering businesses, and cutting corporation tax to help all other businesses too.
"But there’s plenty left to do so I’ll continue to work with local businesses and the government to get the best deal possible for our local economy.”
Next week the MP will be meeting a number of different local businesses to discuss the economy and steps the coalition government can take to support them further.
