A charity set up to support the families of British troops in Afghanistan commemorates its first full year of fundraising having raised in excess of £500,000.

Afghan Heroes, based in North Somerset, was the brainchild of Denise Harris, whose son Corporal Lee Scott lost his life in July 2009. She launched the charity in September last year along with other mums who had also lost sons in Afghanistan.

It aims to support the families of those who have lost their lives in Afghanistan, support returning soldiers and provide comfort for those still in theatre.

In its first year the charity has sent parcels out to every service person in Afghanistan, a move praised publicly by Prince Harry; opened its first holiday home for soldier’s families and helped countless families with counselling and help when required.

To commemorate its anniversary, a black tie ball is taking place on 1st October at DoubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury House in North Somerset where supporters of the charity will be entertained while reflecting on an eventful year.

Denise Harris said: “When the charity was launched we didn’t know what reaction we’d get from the public. The response however has been just amazing which has helped us fulfil all of our aims for the first year and more.

“There has been overwhelming support for the boys and girls in Afghanistan and tremendous understanding of the pain and grief felt by the friends and families of those who have given their lives.

“We are now looking to build on our first year and make sure the memories of those who have paid the ultimate price are not forgotten.

“The black tie dinner will mark a true milestone for the charity and will be a great evening. Anyone who’d like to come along can contact the charity for details and we look forward to seeing friends old and new.”

Major fund-raising events throughout the year included a Mothering Sunday ride-of-respect in March by thousands of motorcyclists who rode through Wootton Bassett to thank the town for its role in the repatriation ceremonies, which raised over £100,000 for the charity.

Denise Harris has worked tirelessly through the summer at shows and fairs raising the profile of Afghan Heroes and selling fund-raising clothing and goods to well-wishers and supporters.

The charity has also been supporting those who have returned home from Afghanistan with injuries or trauma. A holiday home has been opened near Weymouth, Dorset with others planned in the future and a snooker table and other goods sent to Headley Court in Epsom where many returning soldiers receive help with their recovery from injuries.

Independent of other forces charities Afghan Heroes deals specifically with members of the British forces and their families providing real solutions to real needs.
