Knife-wielding robbers threatened staff at a Weston-super-Mare newsagent but got away empty handed.

The hooded offenders entered Hayers Claremont in Birnbeck Road shortly before 6pm on October 26 and demanded cash from the tills.

But shop workers Dave Hayer and Chris Bag, both over 60, refused and the robbers fled when a customer entered the store.

Business partner Gully Hayer, whose other Hayers store in Mead Vale Store targeted last year, says it is a growing problem.

He said: "They were pretty shaken up by it all and we are already putting on two staff at quiet times, but what else can we do?"

"Thankfully nobody was hurt and they didn't get anything."

The attempted robbery was days after two other shop robberies in the town.

A man armed with a knife took cash and cigarettes after threatening staff in Good Days in Milton Road on October 18. This incident was a day after a masked man with a baton raided Orchard News, in Orchard Street and emptied the till.

Police arrested a 17-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man from Weston on Wednesday on suspicion of robbery.

Anybody who saw two people running away from the area, should call Weston CID on 0845 4567000.

There's a bit of a spate of this at the moment. Well done to the two guys for standing up to the cowardly little toerags.
