NO Political party has the overall majority after the election, meaning the UK has a hung parliament for the first time since 1974.

To win in this election one party needed to win 326 seats out of 650.

Conservatives have gained the largest majority of votes at the polls so far with 292 seats won and Labour 251 seats, Liberal Democrat 52 and other parties 27.

Altogether 615 seats have been declared but there are still many results still to come.

The results mean no party has the majority and the Prime Minister has released a statement from Downing Street.

In it he said: "It is my duty to take all steps to ensure Britain has a strong, stable and principled Government. This is chiefly a task for politicians and in time for parliament.

"But to facilitate this process and consistent with the conventions set out in the draft cabinet manual I have asked the cabinet secretary to arrange for the civil service to provide support on requests to parties engaged in discussions on the formation of Government."

Political rules state that where voters choose no decisive party, the current government has the first right to try to form a coalition with other parties.

Talks will now have to take place to decide upon the future of the Government.

After the 1974 election resulted in a hung parliament no coalition was formed and instead the Queen flew home from Australia to try and sort out the crisis.

Her majesty then invited Harold Wilson to form a Government with a minority.

The 2010 election saw an increased turnout of 65 percent, four per cent up on the last General Election, which led to chaos at some polling stations as officials struggled to cope.

There were angry protests in parts of London, Liverpool and Sheffield as a late rush saw voters turned away from the polls, as a result there may be an inquiry into the conduct of election.
