FESTIVE celebrations get underway today in Weston-super-Mare with the official Christmas tree light switch on.

Weston Town Council has contracted for new Christmas lights this year, supported by contributions from traders in both the town centre and at Worle.

Town Mayor Dr Mike Kellaway-Marriott will be switching on lights at 6pm in the Italian Gardens.

The ceremony will include the Ambling Band, carol singing and the Shooting Stars Cheerleaders.

Father Christmas on his sleigh will also be appearing and the mayor will announce the winner of the ‘Design a Festive Poster Competition’.

The new lights will be an improvement on previous years in both quality and quantity.

For the first time in recent years, festive lighting will also extend around Big Lamp Corner and up Meadow Street, an area with smaller shops and boutiques.

The Town Council is also looking to provide new lighting in the trees on the Boulevard, Waterloo Street and Alexandra Parade.

Christmas lighting will also be improved in Worle High Street with new designs and colours.

Late night shopping starts on the same evening until 9pm and car parking is free from 3pm onwards.
