The RNLI will be holding its annual Festival of Motoring
on the Beach Lawns Weston-Super-Mare on Sunday 13th September. This
will coincide with the rescheduled 2009 Big Swim.
The Festival of Motoring features all types of classic and vintage
vehicles. They will arrive from 1000 hrs onwards. Visitors will be able to
inspect old fashioned luxury cars, sports cars, lorries and buses. There will
be many stalls on the Lawns including a Pig Roast and The RNLI souvenir stall.
A lifeboat will be on display for inspection and entrance is free for walking visitors.
The will be the fourth year that Keith Palmer has organised the event on behalf
of the RNLI.
At mid day the “Big Swim” swimmers will begin to arrive at Anchor Head.
They will have braved the cold waters of Weston Bay
(17 degrees C approx ) to raise funds for the RNLI. They will be taken out to
the end of Brean Down by the lifeboats from Birnbeck and will then swim the 2.25
miles escorted by canoes and the lifeboats. When they arrive they will be
warmed up by the staff of the Captains Cabin.
What is the “Annual Big Swim”?
The Big Swim is organised by a group of friends under the leadership of
local businessman Steve Collard. Steve was a leading member of Weston Water
Polo Team for many year, He and some friends decided they wanted to do
something to raise funds for “Their Local Lifeboat Station and Crew” and so
“The Big Swim” was borne some 4 or 5 years ago. This year’s event is being
co-ordinated by Kellie Edwards the landlady of the Captains Cabin,. The
swimmers collect sponsorship and then present a cheque for the proceeds to Weston
Lifeboat Station at the Captains Cabin each year.
