Firefighters Tackling Blaze at Weston-super-Mare Supermarket

RESIDENTS living near a supermarket in Worle have had to be evacuated from their homes this morning after a fire broke out.

Eight fire engines, two aerial appliances and more than 60 firefighters have been tackling the blaze at Lidl supermarket since it started at around 2am.

As a result around 20 people living in Thorn Lane have been evacuated while firefighters try to extinguish the fire from all angles.

Most went to friends and family and Sainsbury's opened in the early hours to provide shelter.

The fire in the roof area of the store rapidly spread throughout the roof and police say gas cylinders in the roof used for temporary heating during refurbishment appear to have been a significant contributor to the fire.

It is anticipated that Fire will require cordon support throughout the morning and quite possibly through and beyond the afternoon rush hour period.

Summer Lane and Bransby Way are closed, as is Worle High Street and the section of New Bristol Road which runs from Moor Lane to the Homebase roundabout.

Summer Lane and New Bristol Road are heavy commuter routes.  They meet at the roundabout where the Lidl shop is situated and therefore major problems with queues have been caused.

Buses have also been affected and Worle Parkway has had to be closed with all trains going straight through.
