In September 2007 David took part in the selection process with four other candidates to fight the next general election for Labour in Weston-super-Mare. He attracted majority support from members and was subsequently selected to be Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate to lead the local party into the next general election.
Since September 2007 David has led a number of campaigns on behalf of the constituents of Weston-super-Mare. His first campaign was against the closure of the Maltlands community centre in the Locking Castle area of the constituency. This campaign was supported by 500 local residents who signed a petition against the Tory plans to press ahead with closure of the centre.
David's next campaign was to secure a fairer funding settlement from central government to provide more police for Weston-super-Mare. David has therefore lobbied the prime minister on this issue and made sure Downing Street is aware of the unfairness inherent in the current funding formula for Avon and Somerset Police Authority.
Furthermore, David has campaigned on transport issues in Weston-super-Mare. David has called on the local authority to sort out the problems with junction 21 and to ease access onto the M5, attract more jobs and industry to the area and improve infrastructure and facilities for the constituency. David has also campaigned for more train carriages in Weston and for rail fares to be made more affordable.
In the rural areas David also remains active and has supported campaigns to reduce heavy freight traffic, improved youth facilities in Banwell and reducing pollution and traffic in areas such as Congresbury. David has also called for an increase in health funding which has been a success with a 12.2% increase in local health funding.
Furthermore, David has supported changes to NHS guidance on treating drug addicts to save taxpayers money in North Somerset, secure tougher regulation of rehab centres and less addicts being sent to Weston. David also continues to support local charities and the voluntary sector and has raised £1,125 for Weston hospicecare.
In addition David has supported actors and the playhouse theatre in their campaign against funding cuts and has supported the 're-build the pier in Weston-super-Mare campaign'.David's policy interests are in the economy, foreign policy, health, education and transport.
About David: David was born in Liberia in 1981 and grew up in South Gloucestershire. He attended Cadbury Heath Primary school, Warmley C of E Primary school and Sir Bernard Lovell comprehensive secondary school. David graduated from the University of the West of England with a BA Hons degree. David has experience of serving as a councillor and extensive experience of committee work and campaigning.
In his spare time he enjoys current affairs, nature, antiques and watching T.V.
