PLANS to regenerate the site of the Royal Pier Hotel in Weston-super-Mare with luxury apartments have been approved.

West Area committee members voted unanimously in favour of the scheme put forward by Surrey businessmen Wahid Samady and Jim Scott.

Mr Samady said: “We are absolutely delighted with this

unanimous decision by the council.

“We will do everything we can to address the issues raised over design materials.

“Watch this space because we would like to bring forward this development as soon as possible.”

The businessmen submitted the plans in the wake of two fires, which gutted the hotel premises and resulted in it being demolished last year.

They will now create a complex of 63 apartments, which will vary in height from four-seven storeys with three floors below ground level.

Some of the apartments could be available as short term holiday rentals and there will be a concierge service.

The scheme also includes underground car and cycle parking with spaces for 97 cars, 13 beach huts to be used as shops and a maritime museum for use by the RNLI.

The complex has been designed by award-winning architects Conran and Partners and it is proposed to rename the area Birnbeck Peninsula.
