The Big Swim raises over £4000 for the RNLI

The 2009 Big Swim, which took place in September, raised a

large amount for the charity which saves lives at sea and the organisers presented

the cheque at the Captain’s Cabin.

On 13th September seven brave swimmers were carried

out to the end of Brean Down and then swam, escorted by boats and canoes, to

Anchor Head in Weston-super-Mare. This is a two and a half mile open sea

crossing with strong tides and waves. However the swimmers were very experienced

and well looked after.

The event, which has been running for eight years was organised

by Steve Collard the MD of Commsplus of Weston. The winner was Sean McHendry.

It was all in aid of the RNLI and all the money collected went

to the Weston RNLI lifeboat station. The presentation of this cheque for £4,000

took place at the Captain’s Cabin on Wednesday night. The winner was also

presented with a shield.

The Lifeboat operations manager, Pete Holder said, “It is always

good to hear from those who raise the funds to allow us to keep saving lives at

sea. We are a volunteer service completely dependent on donations and legacies to

continue our work. This money will help in our rigorous training of the volunteers

who man our lifeboats.”
