Road Scheme To Improve Links Out of Weston Nearing Completion

A new road scheme to help speed up bus journey times between Weston and Bristol along the A370 is nearing completion.

The scheme at Bristol Road, Congresbury (immediately north of its junction with the B3133 Smallway) has included the remarking of the existing carriageway to include a third traffic lane for use by public transport and taxis to avoid congestion.

A 30mph extension of the speed limit throughout Congresbury and a cycle track for north-bound cyclists have also been included in the scheme.

The completed scheme is part of our ongoing commitment to the Greater Bristol Bus Network (GBBN) project, which involves a multi-million pound investment by the West of England authorities and First Bus in 10 public transport corridors across the area.

Aimed at providing substantial improvements in the quality of bus services, GBBN is being rolled out in stages and the Congresbury scheme will further contribute to reliable and shorter bus journey times on the A370 route as well as providing an improved environment for all road users.

Following talks with Congresbury Parish Council during the initial design stage, we have also carried out additional works, including the installation of a Puffin crossing and improvement works to the existing footways.

Our officers are also working with the Congresbury Horticultural Society to finalise a proposed landscaping scheme to replace the silver birch trees and daffodil bulbs that were removed as part of the construction works.

 Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, executive member with responsibility for roads, said this scheme shows once again how effectively the council is working with both regional and local partners to make improvements for North Somerset residents.
