PART of Weston-super-Mare’s seafront is to close for nearly a month to allow work on a multimillion-pound project to enhance area to be completed.

A section of Marine Parade will be closed northbound from Carlton Street from September 1-24.

Royal Parade will also be closed off to through traffic from Knightstone Road from September 1-10, although access to the Winter Gardens and Sovereign Centre will be maintained.

The road closures are necessary to complete the work taking place at the new Pier Square.

The bulk of the work to lay a new road surface and finish carriageway and drainage works for the Pier Square development is due to be completed next month.

The work is part of North Somerset Council's scheme to redesign and improve Pier Square.

As part of the scheme, roads in the area have been redesigned to reduce the amount of vehicles, improve traffic flow and make the area more pedestrian friendly.

The lawned area has also been improved and a new seating area created for residents and visitors wanting to sit and enjoy the sea views.

It is also hoped that the improvements will encourage people to walk between the seafront and town centre.

North Somerset Council's executive member for strategic planning, Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, said: “Of course we realise that this will cause disruption but we have thought about this carefully so that the work will not interfere with summer holidays, the revised Grand Pier opening and continued access for their works, or any major events on the seafront.”
