The Chocolate Smarties have been presented to The 1st Nailsea Scout Group to kick start a year of fundraising.
The Scout Group aims to raise £250,000 through 2010 and into 2011 to replace its Training and Activity Centre in Clevedon Road, Nailsea.
Each of the 240 children that attend the 1st Nailsea Scout Group have been given a tube of Smarties and once emptied, are asked to fill it up with 20p coins.
Each tube of sweets, donated by Bakers Dolphin, the Weston-super-Mare based coach operator, once filled will contain £10 that will go towards reaching the final total.
Martin Weavers, Chairman of Friends of First Nailsea said: “We really wanted to make sure that all the children could get involved with the fundraising so everyone can do their bit to help us raise lots of money.
“We are very grateful to Bakers Dolphin for not only donating the Smartie tubes but also donating £1,000 to help us begin our fundraising.”
The 1st Nailsea Scout Group has 240 youngsters aged from 6 to 14 years in its Beaver, Cubs and Scouts troops and offers varied and challenging indoor and outdoor activities including archery, canoeing, rock climbing, sailing and camping.
Amanda Harrington of Bakers Dolphin said: “As a locally based charity we like to support locally based organisations when we can.
“The training and activity centre is a big part of the Nailsea community so to see it in need of repair is upsetting for everyone.
“The whole community is rallying around to make sure that the target is met and we are just happy to help in any way we can.”
