A church in Weston will be hosting a concert on October 10 as part of a simultaneous worldwide event to raise awareness and vital funds for the hospice movement.

Voices For Hospices happens across the world every two years, and sees a wave of concerts taking place to mark World Hospice and Palliative Care Day.

As part of the event, the Worle Youth Choir, and Gloucestershire-based Fascinating Rhythms will be performing a concert at Victoria Methodist Church, Station Road, Weston-super-Mare, and tickets are still available.

All the money raised by the concert will go to Weston Hospicecare, which provides palliative care to about 1,000 people with life-limiting illnesses each year, from North Somerset and neighbouring parts of Somerset.

Organiser Pat Griffiths, who was a volunteer at the hospice for 15 years, said the concert has been very well attended in the past and she is hoping people will snap up the tickets this year to raise as much money as possible.

Pat, whose husband Peter Griffiths was chairman of the board of trustees at the hospice for eight years, said: “The concert has been very well supported in the past and we are hoping for the same this year.

“The two different choirs will be performing quite different songs which should make for a really good evening of entertainment.

“All the money raised by the event will be going to Weston Hospicecare, but it is also part of something that is happening right around the world to raise awareness of the hospice movement, and funds.

“People can get in touch with me to buy tickets, or get them through the hospice, or turn up on the night and pay on the door.”

The event starts at 7pm, tickets cost £6 and £3 for children, and there will be refreshments available.

Sue Sweet, fundraiser for Weston Hospicecare, said: “This is a really amazing event taking place across the world at the same time, and it’s fantastic to think that we can be part of it in our own way.

“We hope it will be well supported by the people of Weston because every penny raised goes back to the hospice to be spent on the services we provide to the community.”
