WESTON CHARITY PLEA TO STOP CLOSURE

CHARITY bosses are considering shutting down because of struggling funds.
South Weston Community Association (SWCA) will have to decide whether to close its doors at the end of October.
The group was established more than 40 years ago on the Bournville estate and runs the annual strawberry fair, jumble sales, beetle drives, a youth cafe and a lunch club for the elderly.
It also employs people at the community cafe in the For All Healthy Living Centre.
But members say they are now struggling to obtain funding because they do not have £30,000 in reserves.
When the association only ran as a charity, and was staffed by volunteers, there was no problem with having to keep money in reserves.
But when the group started a social enterprise with the community cafe - it started paying wages to five staff.
This meant the group had outgoings of about £10,000 a month and now needs three months worth of expenditure money in reserves in order to obtain funds.
In a bid to continue operating the charity is considering asking residents living on the four estates - Bournville, Oldmixon, Potteries and Coronation - to donate a minimum of £6 a year by standing order.
Management committee member Ian Parker said: "If all the residents do this, it will cover SWCA's outgoings and save the charity from closure.
"We have no choice but to ask the residents for help because we are being strangled by red tape and bureaucracy."
