PUPILS have been researching the secrets of the forensic world thanks to an enrichment programme run by Weston College.

Over the last seven weeks students have investigated an elaborate crime scene and undertaken forensic experiments such as DNA, fibre, blood, fingerprinting and handwriting analyses.

Five year nine students from Worle, Priory, Broadoak and Wyvern were selected for their talent and interest in the science field.

The sessions ran after school as to not interrupt students’ lessons.

The project was based around solving a murder with a mock-courtroom set-up on the last day.

At the end of the project students presented their findings and prizes were awarded for the most comprehensive scientific investigation.

Jack Masters, of Wyvern School, said: "It was really interesting and enlightening, and the mock courtroom was really cool."

Progression Officer Paul Harper said: "The project has now been running for five years with places in great demand.

"Our aim is to help raise achievement levels and the aspirations of students in the local area, with the aim of increasing their awareness of careers in the scientific field."

Georgia Niblett from Priory School said: "I really liked it all because it gave me an insight into what I would do on the course."

Guest speakers, including a local Crime Scene Investigator, who provided students with inside knowledge and a useful question and answer forum to enhance activities during the project.

Paul added: "We hope this project provides an interesting and challenging enrichment to the current science curriculum and it is hoped that this collaboration will help continue and strengthen the curriculum links between local schools and Weston College."
