A man, who was institutionalised for 10 years, hanged himself 10 days after he was moved to a non-secure unit.

Clive Hemington, 40, died following an incident at Sandringham Villa care home in Weston-super-Mare on July 10, 2008.

Mr Hemington suffered from depressive disorders, and was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, suffering delusions and believing he was being persecuted by people, and was hospitalised.

In 2001, he was put into an intensive and secure unit at Barrow Hospital, and was later moved to the Hazel Unit at Callington Road Hospital.

But Mr Hemington's team of carers made the decision to move him to a different unit to give him better quality of life.

On July 10, Shane Hogg, a health care assistant at the home, found Mr Hemington dead in his room, having hanged himself.

At the inquest, Mr Hemington's parents, Gillian and David, and his brother Neil, criticised the decision to move him to an non-secure unit.

Assistant deputy coroner Tony Woodburn recorded that Mr Hemington took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed.

This is actually very sad to see. It highlights the need for us to care more for people who need it most. i can't belive that after so long of being in care in a secure unit they just transferred him to not being watched. RIDICULOUS. Either he managed to convince staff he was fine or ... what? what's the alternative? this has frustrated me :(
