Volunteers who help to run a homeless shelter in Weston-super-Mare over the Christmas period have made an appeal for more helpers.

Comfort at Christmas operates each year at the hall at St Paul's Church, Walliscote Road and opens from Christmas Eve until after breakfast on December 29.

The shelter has been running in the resort for 20 years and offers food, accommodation, toiletries and clothing, but this year the charity Comfort and Warmth, which runs the 24-hour shelter, is in desperate need of more volunteers.

The shelter operates a shift system with volunteers asked to work either the morning, afternoon, evening or night shift.

Each year the charity helps around 40 people a day who are homeless or who are staying in bed and breakfast accommodation and have no place to call their own. It gives visitors three hot meals a day and provides tea, coffee and biscuits and even gives out warm clothes such as socks, underwear and coats.

A TV area with DVDs is set up in the church hall along with a sleeping area for guests that need to stay overnight.

Comfort and Warmth chairman John Codd, who has been involved in running the shelter for the past 14 years, said: "We have had a lot of support this year and have had lots of donations of food, bedding and clothes. The church has also been fantastic and donates us the building for the whole period.

"But one thing we are short of this year is volunteers, especially for the night and evening shifts."

Normally, there are 10-12 working on any day shift and around five volunteers needed to man each evening and night shift.

To volunteer or help the shelter, call Mr Codd on 01934 813139.
