Do you recognise sex attacker's top?

POLICE are trying to trace the owner of this hooded top, who they say is responsible for a sex attack in Weston-super-Mare.

The burgundy zip-up top, which includes the logos of alternative rock band Fightstar and alcoholic drink Jagermeister, was left at the scene of the attack near the Hutton Moor Leisure Centre last Sunday.

The top has been sent for forensic testing to recover any DNA evidence that could lead to the identification of its owner. But detectives are also calling on anyone who recognises it to come forward.

It has the letters FS and the words "Be Human" – the name of one of Fightstar's albums – on the front, the Fightstar logo on the back and the Jagermeister logo on the left sleeve, all printed in yellow.

Police believe it was bought online or at a shop outside the Weston area.

Detective Inspector Julie Mackay, who is leading the investigation, said she was keen to hear from anyone who thinks they know who the top belongs to.

She said: "This jumper is distinctive, as research has showed that it is not commonly sold at sports shops or other outlets in the area.

"We have yet to find a local outlet that sells it and have only found it available on the internet."

Officers will return to the scene of the attack, on a cycle track between Searle Crescent and Hutton Moor Road, at 6am this Sunday – exactly a week after it took place.

The visit is an attempt to find potential witnesses among any regular early-morning users of the track who are not already aware of the attack.

The victim was walking along the track, which runs alongside the A370 Herluin Way, at 6am last Sunday when she was dragged into nearby bushes and sexually assaulted.

The attacker, who ran off in the direction of the Asda superstore in Philips Road, is white, in his early 20s and of large build.

Police are appealing for potential witnesses, particularly anyone who may have been cycling or jogging in the area, to come forward.

Det Insp Mackay said: "This is a well-used track and we believe people would have been using it to get to work at that time of the morning.

"We are hoping that by returning to the scene it will help us identify witnesses to this crime.

"It may be that people saw the offender but they did not realise the significance."

CCTV images are being checked in a bid to trace the offender and police have increased their patrols in the area.

Det Insp Mackay added: "I would like to reassure the public that attacks like these are very rare in this area and that a full investigation has been launched.

"I would remind all members of the public to continue to be vigilant and aware of their own personal safety.

"Anyone who sees anyone acting suspiciously in the area is asked to call us."
