WESTON-SUPER-MARE took their second Blue Square Bet South home win of the season thanks to a solitary Jamie Price strike at the Woodspring Stadium.

In the first half, Weston outplayed Basingstoke, producing some delightful passing football.

They were denied by an offside decision on three minutes when a move involving Dean Grubb, Martin Slocombe and Brett Trowbridge opened the visitors’ defence.

Later, Marcus Duharty and Nat Pepperell both went close with lobs from distance.

The crucial goal came on 13 minutes when Dean Grubb was fouled near the byline, which earned a booking for Norman Smart. From Dayle Grubb’s free-kick, Price scored with a shot at the far post.

As Weston kept up pressure, Duharty and Dean Grubb were only inches over the crossbar with decent efforts.

In the second half, Basingstoke dominated the midfield, but the home defence held firm with Craig Rand and Matt Villis outstanding.

Basingstoke’s best chance fell to Steve Leider, whose 56th-minute effort forced Weston goalkeeper Lloyd Irish to concede a corner.
