SOMERSET’S Pete Trego has his sights set on a winter down under with England.

The Weston-super-Mare- born all-rounder says he has had good feedback from his performances for England Lions this summer.

Trego helped England’s second team win a triangular series against their India and West Indies counterparts in June and July.

Now he is hoping he has done enough to be part of the Lions squad that will go to Australia at the same time as the full Ashes tour.

“I felt like I performed for the Lions,” he said. “The feedback is they were happy with me, which suggests I will get another opportunity – hopefully this winter.

“The natural progression is to get picked in a full squad. Whether I will or not I don’t know, but I certainly feel what I did with the Lions deserves more opportunities.

“If five wickets and 70 with the bat, winning the series and being a key member of the team is my last duty for England that will be pretty disappointing, so I am hoping I get another chance in the very near future.”

Trego also impressed against Pakistan A in Dubai in February.

“I am not really sure how I am viewed, but I can only hope and pray that the six weeks over the winter and the two weeks this summer will be enough to be included in something,” he said.

Trego plans to be in Australia whatever happens thanks to his friendship with Damien Wright, the all-rounder who was Somerset’s overseas player for the first month of the season.

“It looks like I will be in Australia playing for Damien Wright’s club side, Casey-South Melbourne, and looking at my email and waiting by the phone,” he said.

“I need to keep my game in order and my fitness levels up, so when the call comes for the Hong Kong Sixes or the Lions or the one-day squad, I am ready to go.”

The second day of Somerset’s Championship match with Durham at Taunton was rained off yesterday, meaning the hosts remain 287-4 in their first innings.

Somerset are at home to Surrey in the Clydesdale Bank 40 on Sunday at 1.45pm. Admission is £1 for under-16s.
